Yes, you read it right you can actually earn a full-time income online from blogging. And in this article, I will show you how to start your own blog step by step and earn up to 6 figure monthly income from it.
I’ve been blogging for almost 10 years now so I’m pretty sure that I have experienced and learned every aspect of blogging.
Before anything else, I would like to make it clear that blogging is in no means related to network marketing, networking or multi-level marketing.
What is a Blog
A blog is a type of website that contains articles or also called blog posts, this website pesoadvice.com for an instance is a blog. The main goal of most bloggers is to write about their hobbies or something they are knowledgeable about and make money out of it. Here are the most common types of blog contents/articles to give you the idea:
- News eg. Philippines showbiz news
- Food Recipes eg. How to cook adobo
- Product Reviews eg. Smartphone Reviews
- Reviews of Popular Places/Tourist Spots eg. Best places to visit in Baguio City
I’m pretty sure you know about vlogging which is basically the video version of blogging. Where in blogging you write articles while in vlogging you record videos.
What I Love about Blogging
For me, blogging is the best way to make money online. Aside from the obvious which is you can work at home, you don’t need to commute every day to go to work, you have no boss, and my favorite part is you can earn money passively (meaning you earn money while doing minimal work).
Especially if you’re blogging your passion or hobby, you make money while playing online games if you are a gamer, you make money while traveling if you love traveling. And the best one about having passive income is you earn money while sleeping. But don’t think that it’s that simple and easy, you will need to put a lot of effort into writing articles in the first months. And if you do everything right and the time comes your blog posts start to rank up in google search, you will make money from those articles for the years to come.
What are the Requirements to Start a Blog
Whilst everyone can do blogging, here are the things you’re going to need to start your own blog:
- A computer or laptop with a good internet connection – Blogging is an online job, so obviously you can’t write and post articles if you don’t have a computer and internet connection. You can do it on a smartphone but it will be a lot harder.
- Good English grammar – This is not that important but you definitely should know basic English grammar to be able to write good blog posts. People would prefer to read and trust a blog with good grammar.
- Your Niche – Before starting your blog, you should think of your niche first. Niche is the kind or topic of the articles you’re going to write about. I highly recommend writing about your hobby or the things you enjoy doing, by doing this you will not only do blogging because of money but because you love and enjoy it. And trust me you will never get bored by doing the things you love. Since I’m a gamer, my blog that earns the most, by the way, is a gaming blog. I write tutorials and reviews of anything related to gaming.
- Bank Account with Visa or Mastercard – I included this one since here in the Philippines, not everyone yet has a credit card not like in the US. So if you plan on starting a blog you will need a visa or MasterCard which are the kind of cards accepted in online transactions. You will need a card to purchase your website, and you need a bank account to receive your future income from your blog.
How Much Does it Cost to Start a Blog
This is probably one of the most asked questions by those who plan on doing blogging as a job. You don’t need a lot of money to start a blog honestly, you can create a profitable blog for as low as 70 US Dollars or approx. 3,500 Philippine Pesos.
No, you will not pay us, that initial money you’re going to spend will be for the web hosting provider, a web host is like a commercial space where you rent to put your website. All websites on the internet like facebook and google use web hosts for them to work. Even us here at pesoadvice.com pay for a web host for our blog to be online.
If you’re going to say that 70 dollars for a web host is expensive, and take note that’s an investment for your business, let me break it down for you.
3,500 PHP per year
291.6 PHP per month
9.7 PHP per day
9 Pesos per day is just like a one-way jeepney fare here in the Philippines. Let’s say worst-case scenario and you will only earn 5,000 per month, you can pay your entire 1-year website costs in just 1 month. All upcoming revenue from your blog will be clean.
The amount of money you will be going to spend in the future will then depend on what you’re going to blog about. If you’re going to review products, for example, you’ll need to buy the actual product to be able to review it properly. If you’re going to be doing a travel blog, you’ll need the money for your travel expenses like bus/plane tickets, hotel reservations, etc. But that money is not really going to waste even if you’re not a blogger, isn’t it? You are buying a product that you can use yourself, and you are enjoying it while you are traveling.
No need to pay for expensive website developers
Lucky for you who are reading this article, because, in this tutorial, we will teach you how to create a website for free. If you don’t have any idea how much website developers charge for a website, they cost more or less 50,000 pesos, that is web host excluded. In this tutorial, we will teach you for free, you will only pay for the web hosting provider.
Aren’t There Ways to do Blogging for Free?
Sure there are free blogging platforms (eg. blogger, wix, weebly, etc) that let you create a blog for free, but when it comes to monetization or making money from a blog that is made from these free platforms, I don’t recommend it.
As I said, there aren’t much earning opportunities available for a free blog. Advertising companies such as Google Adsense have higher chances of approving top-level domains (websitename.com) rather than blogs using a free sub-domain (websitename.blogspot.com). The same thing goes pretty much with every monetization method like affiliate marketing and sponsorships. If you want your blog to be trusted and you yourself to be taken seriously by potential business partners as a blogger, purchase your own blog with a domain name.
And speaking from experience, back in the day when I was also a newbie in blogging I have created several free blogs using blogger.com and not a single one of them succeeded.
How Much Can You Earn from Blogging
As I already said in the beginning, you can make as big as 6 figures per month from blogging. But only if you do it properly. I want you to keep in mind that you won’t be earning that huge amount right from the first month of blogging. It will take years to make a full-time income from your blog. At best, you can earn a decent amount in 6 months to 1 year if you know what you’re doing. I’ve been blogging for several years now and I’ve been in all kinds of trials and errors before I got to where I am today.
There’s no such thing as an overnight success, most of the get rich quick schemes are scams trying to take advantage of people who desperately want to become millionaires quickly.
How do you Make Money from Blogging
The basic and most common way to earn money from your blog is by ads. I bet almost all websites you have visited has banner ads showing up on all parts of the site. The best way to put ads on your website and earn money is through Google Adsense. It’s not easy to get accepted to Google Adsense but once you got an account approved, you’re pretty much secured that you will have a stable income coming from your blog.
This is another great way to monetize your blog. In fact, affiliate marketing provides the majority of income I get from my blogs. Here’s how I breakdown the percentage of earnings coming from ads vs affiliate programs in my blogs:
- 30% of income comes from ads
- The other 70% comes from affiliate programs
Here’s our article that explains Affiliate Marketing in details and how to do it.
You won’t get sponsors on your blog until you reach certain popularity and authority in your niche. Brands will begin contacting you for sponsorships that can generate you a huge amount of revenue. Sponsorships mainly come in forms of sponsored posts or banner ads that you’re going to put on your website. This is also one of the good reasons to add a contact page on your blog, you’ll never know when you’ll receive such opportunities.
Things to Consider First before Creating your Blog
Here are some things you need to think of and a lot your time first before creating your blog and spending that money.
Decide on a Good Domain Name
Domain name will be the name and address of your website, for this blog, for example, the domain name is PesoAdvice.com. Your domain name should be related of course with your niche or your blog contents. If your blog will be all about gaming, you can name it blackshadowgaming.com (this is just an example) or whatever you want as long as it has the keyword “game” or “gaming”. You should put a lot of time into deciding for your domain name as it is not advisable to change it in the future. But don’t worry if you want to create a new blog with a different name, that’s fine, you can create as many blogs as you want.
Don’t Expect to Make Money right away
As I said, you won’t make any money from your blog in the first month or even your first year of blogging. Thus, I advise you to have a separate full-time job while blogging. Once you reach success in blogging, that’s the time you can decide to quit your regular job and focus on blogging full-time.
Choose a Good Web Hosting Provider
You wouldn’t want your blog that you will be going to put a lot of time and effort to be handled by a bad web hosting company, that’s why picking a reputable one is necessary. I’ve been blogging for many years and I’ve also tried a bunch of web hosts so I know which gives bad service and which one is good for your website. Most of my websites are hosted on Bluehost, it is also one of the most recommended web hosting providers by bloggers. And I can assure you, they are a very trustworthy company.
Step by Step Guide to Start your own Blog
Now that you know the basics of blogging, and if you’re ready to start your very first profitable blog. Here we go:
1.) Open Bluehost website. Click here to go to the Bluehost homepage. This is a special affiliate link that gives a 30% discount.
2.) Choose a plan. For your very first blog, you can choose the basic plan for now. But if you have the money, go ahead and choose the recommended Choice Plus. If you don’t understand anything of the details, it basically means your website will be ready for huge traffic, and this plan already includes domain privacy and site backup.
3.) Create a domain name. Next step will be where you will create your domain name. Enter the domain name you have in mind in the “Create a new domain” box and click on next. If the domain name is not available, there will be suggestions that will appear. I highly recommend you to only use .com .net .org domains.
Deciding on the domain usually takes time especially most domain names you might think of probably was already taken. If you need time to think of a domain name for your blog, you can click on “I’ll Create my domain later” and do the process later.
4.) Sign up to Bluehost. Now you will need to create your Bluehost account. Fill up all the required fields on the “Account Information”.
On the “Package Information”, you can choose from 12 months, 24 months, and 36 months. You will be able to see the total price there to help you decide.
On the “Package Extras” part, you will have the option to include extra services with an extra charge of course. If you have the extra money, I recommend adding “Domain Privacy Protection” as it makes your name as the owner of the website hidden from the public.
5.) Payment. You should see the total amount you will be paying right before the “Payment Information”. Now you only need to enter your card details and you’re done purchasing your website.
6.) Create your WordPress site. Once you’re logged in to Bluehost, you will now create your WordPress site. WordPress by the way if you don’t know it yet, is the most popular and common blogging platform in the world. It’s pretty much simple to create one, just fill up the information what’s being asked.
And now that you have created your own blog, it’s time to write some articles. Look for the posts menu and click on Add New. After writing your first blog post, click on publish and that’s it, your very first article will be live. Don’t worry if it’s not perfect, you can edit and update it anytime.
My Tips on Writing Good Blog Posts
Let’s cover some of the technicalities of writing blog posts (SEO techniques I’ve been doing that are proven effective). Blogging is not just writing articles and expect to make money that simple. There are a lot of things to learn and apply to your blog to be able to write articles that can rank in google search. Here are some pointers to do so:
Write Long and Informative Articles
Having a long article is also a proven technique to increase your chance of ranking on top of google search. Your article should be long enough to cover all the details about the topic you’re writing about. But you shouldn’t write a long article just to call it long, make sure to write content related to the topic only.
Use Heading Tags
Headings (H1, H2, H3) are used to assign different sections and sub-sections of your blog post. This not only makes your blog post easier to read for people but also to google who decides whether or not to put your post on top of google search.
Add Images to your Post
Images make your blog post not boring to your readers. Imagine reading a very long article without a single image in it. Images can also provide something that words can’t, adding an actual photo of a product, for example, is so much easier than describing how it looks in words. Always remember to add ALT tags to your images, by the way. Google bot can’t view images so it needs a written description of the image to be able to understand what’s in it.
It is also highly advisable to use your own photos on your blog posts, this is to avoid any copyright infringement charges against you. Using your own original photos and not just generic ones also add to the trustworthiness of your blog.
Write Original Content Only
Never copy paste blog posts. This thought might cross every new blogger’s minds, “Why spend hours writing an article if can just copy articles from other blogs and post in my own?”. To be honest, I’ve done it too before, but that blog never ranked on google. And just like photos, your blog can be taken down if the original author of the contents you’re stealing reports your site.
Another crucial reason why you shouldn’t copy other people’s blog posts is you won’t get accepted in Google Adsense, which is one of the best ways to earn revenue from your blog.
So how exactly can you write all original and long content? This shouldn’t be a problem at all if you are blogging about something you’re actually knowledgeable about. You won’t run out of ideas to write if you know the topic very well.
